PMBOK
Project Management Book of Knowledge

PMBOK is the Project Management Institute's (PMI) publication of "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge" (2000 Edition)" .

This is a project management guide/documentation that promotes a project management standard that is widely used today.

PMI uses the PMBOK as the basis for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification but it does not cover all the subjects in the exam.

Even though PMBOK covers most areas of project management in general and not software project management specifically, it is widely used in the software industry. It's process oriented approach makes is a useful combination to other methodologies such as UML.

PMP certification: is it really worth anything?

A brief article by H. Kent Craig on the value of PMP certification.

Excerpt
A COUPLE DAYS ago I received an e-mail from an under-30 project manager who has a degree in construction management and five years of experience as a project manager for a larger HVAC contractor in south Florida. He asked if I thought that his earning the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute was worth anything. Would it be worth the considerable time, trouble and expense that earning it would entail and, most importantly, would it help accelerate his career track? My four-word answer to him was, "yes, no, maybe, possibly."

Software Development and Linearity
(Why some project management methodologies don't work)

This Max Wideman's article explores some PM methodologies including PMBOK.

Excerpt
We start with this one because it is, perhaps, the most widely known. However, it is more of a cult than a rigorous methodology. As the Guide itself says "The primary purpose of this document is to identify and describe that subset of the PMBOK® that is generally accepted. Generally accepted means that the knowledge and practices described are applicable to most projects most of the time, and that there is widespread consensus about their value and usefulness. Generally accepted does not mean that the knowledge and practices described are or should be applied uniformly on all projects; the project management team is always responsible for determining what is appropriate for any given project."

A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)– 2000 Edition is your basic reference and the world’s de facto standard for the project management profession. It was designated an
American National Standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2000) by the American National Standards Institute in March 2001.

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) is an inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the profession of project management. The PMBOK® Guide identifies and describes the subset of principles and practices within the PMBOK® that are generally accepted and applicable to most projects most of the time. The guide also provides a common lexicon for talking about project management.

The Project Management Institute (PMI®) uses the PMBOK® Guide as one of the references for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Examination.
