More benefits of Software Metrics.

The life of a software project does not end after the initial development. In most cases there are enhancement,  support and process improvement issues that have to be addressed.

Some uses and benefits of software metrics during project construction:

  • Monitoring Functional Creep
Software metrics provides project management with an objective tool by which the size of a project can be monitored over its lifecycle.
  • Assessing and Prioritizing Rework
Project managers can objectively and quantitatively measure the scope and impact of a change request during project development and estimate the impact on the project's schedule and costs. This immediate feedback to the user on the impact of the rework allows them to evaluate and prioritize requests.

Some uses and benefits of software metrics after software implementation:

  • Planning Support Resources and Budgets
The amount of support resources required for an application is related to the application's size.  This will allow management to confidently budget for the deployment of support resources.
  • Benchmarking
The function point count developed can be used to provide input on productivity and quality performance indicators. These can then be compared to those of other in-house development teams and implementation environments. It will enable the identification of best practices throughout your organization and comparison to external industry data. This external data is readily in the ISBSG Repository.
  • Planning New Releases
Software metrics can assist the project manager to plan and group change requests for each new release of the application.
